Blue Jays Acquire Infielder From Royals For Castillo And Minor Leaguer

Merrifield Traded to Blue Jays in Deadline Deal

Blue Jays acquire infielder from Royals for Castillo and minor leaguer

Merrifield ends Royals career with 1,001 hits, 14th in club history

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired infielder Whit Merrifield from the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Max Castillo and a minor league infielder, the teams announced Tuesday.

Merrifield, whose contract runs through 2023 with a mutual option for 2024, ends his Royals career with 1,001 hits, 14th in club history. He also had 174 stolen bases, sixth in franchise history.

The Blue Jays pulled off the deal ahead of Tuesday's Trade Deadline. Merrifield, 33, is a versatile player who can play second base, shortstop and the outfield.

After years of his name surfacing in trade rumors, the Royals finally found a deal that made sense for both sides. The Blue Jays get a proven veteran who can help them in their quest for a World Series title, while the Royals get a young pitcher with upside and a minor league infielder.
